What is CBM (cubic metre)?

CBM is the volume of your cargo in cubic metres, the basis for ocean LCL and air freight pricing. Convert each dimension to metres and multiply: CBM = (L × W × H) in metres. A 40 × 30 × 25 cm carton is 0.40 × 0.30 × 0.25 = 0.03 CBM. Multiply by the carton count for the shipment total. Ocean LCL is charged on a weight-or-measure (W/M) basis — whichever is greater, one tonne or one CBM. Air freight uses a volumetric weight of about 167 kg per CBM.

How to calculate CBM step by step

  1. Convert every dimension to metresCBM is defined in metres, so a carton measured in centimetres must be divided by 100 first. A 40 x 30 x 25 cm carton becomes 0.40 x 0.30 x 0.25 m. Measuring in inches instead? Divide each figure by 39.37.
  2. Multiply the three dimensions0.40 x 0.30 x 0.25 = 0.03 CBM per carton. This is the volume one carton occupies, and it is always based on the outer dimensions of the packed box, never the inner cavity.
  3. Multiply by the carton count100 cartons at 0.03 CBM is 3 CBM in total. For mixed shipments, calculate each carton type separately and add the results together - never average dimensions across different box sizes.
  4. Compare volume against weightOcean LCL is priced on whichever is greater, the CBM or the metric tonnage. Three CBM weighing 1.2 tonnes bills as 3 revenue tons because the volume figure is larger than the weight figure.

Understanding weight or measure (W/M)

One revenue ton is whichever is greater

Ocean LCL carriers bill in revenue tons: one cubic metre or one metric tonne, whichever produces the larger number. Light bulky cargo bills on volume, while dense cargo such as tiles or machinery bills on weight.

Air freight uses a different ratio

Air freight converts volume to weight at roughly 167 kg per cubic metre, which is the IATA 6000 cm3/kg volumetric rule expressed per CBM. One CBM of cargo weighing less than 167 kg is billed as 167 kg.

Know when a full container is cheaper

LCL cost scales with volume, so beyond roughly 13 to 15 CBM a 20 ft full container load is often cheaper than paying per cubic metre once handling and destination charges are included.

Cubic feet still appears on US paperwork

One cubic metre is 35.31 cubic feet. US domestic documents and some airlines quote CFT, so the same shipment can legitimately appear as 3 CBM on one document and 105.9 CFT on another.

Common mistakes

Using inner dimensions

CBM must be calculated from the outer carton dimensions. Inner dimensions describe the product cavity and understate the space the shipment actually occupies on the vessel.

Mixing units mid-calculation

Multiplying centimetres by metres produces a number that looks plausible but is wrong by a factor of 100 or more. Convert everything to metres before multiplying.

Forgetting the pallet

A 1.2 x 1.0 m pallet stacked to 1.5 m is 1.8 CBM of billed space even if the cartons on it total only 1.5 CBM. Remember that stacked height includes the pallet base, typically 0.14 m.

Assuming volume always governs

Dense cargo bills on weight instead. Always run both numbers: a shipment of 2 CBM weighing 3 tonnes bills as 3 revenue tons, not 2.

Ignoring stacking limits

Cargo marked non-stackable is charged for the full height it blocks inside the container, which can double the effective CBM even when the cartons themselves are short.

Should I use inner or outer carton size?

Always the outer size. Freight is charged on the space the carton occupies, so board thickness and any bulge count toward the CBM.
